**焼尻島の伝説（1）

漂流してきた焼尻島**

そのむかし、蝦夷ヶ島に大きな陥没が起き、
一夜にして大きな湖――今の支笏湖ができたといいます。

大地のうねりはやがて大波となり、太平洋の岸に押し寄せ、
千歳のあたりまで洗い流しました。
そのとき、今の千歳神社の裏にあった山がもぎ取られ、
海へ、海へと押し出されて、ぽっかりと水の上に浮かびました。

山はそのまま長いあいだ日本海を漂い、
やがて留萌の沖で動かなくなりました。
それが、今の焼尻島になったのだと語り伝えられています。

そして、山が流れ出たあとの深い溝は、
今も千歳川となって、静かに流れているのだそうです。

The Island That Drifted Across the Sea**

Long ago, it is said that the land of Ezo collapsed,
and in a single night a great lake was born—what we now call Lake Shikotsu.

The earth’s upheaval became a mighty wave that surged along the Pacific coast,
reaching as far as the Chitose region and washing much away.
In that chaos, a mountain behind what is now Chitose Shrine was torn free,
pushed out to sea, and left floating upon the water.

For a long, long time, the mountain drifted across the Sea of Japan,
until it finally came to rest off the coast of Rumoi.
So the old tales say, that drifting mountain became today’s Yagishiri Island.

And the deep channel left behind where the mountain once stood
still flows quietly as the Chitose River.
